Yggdrasil, the tree of life.
In Nordic mythology Yggdrasils roots hold the realms Asgard home of the gods, Midgard home of the humans, Jotunheim home of the giants and Nifelheim the realm of the dead and ice. Under the trees mighty canopy the gods holds their gatherings. The three norns, seeres´s, Uld, Skuld and Verdandi live by the roots and weave the past, present and future.
The legends and details of this mighty tree are many. The Edda, book of nordic mythology, mention the tree as an ash tree. But I don't think that is correct. The oldest tree in the world holds an age of 9550 years. It is called old Tjikko and grows here in Sweden Dalarna. I believe this little fir tree is the real Yggdrasil. This is the true tree of life!
Old Tjikko/Yggdrasil has inspired me in the making of the painting's symbol. The golden circles are sun symbols, carved into rocks all over scandinavia. And the shaded white that rises from the lower part of the painting reminds me of the mist that we so often have the pleasure to enjoy here in the north. It is painted with five layers of acrylic paint. With a spatula as my main tool and lots of water.
Thank you for showing interest in my art. I hope this painting will be a joy to you.
